Dear Members of Parliament,

Four years ago, the Victorian Labor government demonstrated bold leadership.

The 2021 commitment to create new central west national parks was truly significant. It signalled that the Andrews/Allan Labor Government was taking conservation, community values and evidence-led decision-making seriously.

Over the last few years they've repeatedly promised to create these new national parks and conservation areas. And they've missed every deadline.

Victoria has razed and settled on more of its original forests, grasslands and wetlands than any other Australian state. It’s hard to fully comprehend the knock-on effects to wildlife, and yet it could not be more important to try.

Over 370 rare and threatened plants and animals depend on the landscapes and habitats across the central west to survive. They belong in these places and these places belong to them.

Yet today they remain unprotected. This is the longest it has taken any State Government to turn a promise into a park in twenty-five years.

I call on you to leave a legacy of creation, not destruction. To keep safe what we can never replace, I ask you to:

• Legislate the Wombat-Lerderderg, Mount Buangor and Pyrenees national parks without further delay.

• Formally protect the Cobaw Conservation Park, Wellsford Forest and other reserves.

• Support Traditional Owner joint management to honour Country and culture.

• Provide proper resources for park management and appropriate park infrastructure.

• End all remaining industrial-scale native forest logging, including ‘salvage’ operations.

Our national parks and conservation reserves keep wildlife and habitats safe. They create and purify water, clean our air, store climate disrupting pollution and ease the risk of floods.

They support local communities through nature-based jobs and tourism. They are beautiful places of safe respite for millions of people. They are part of the fabric of our communities and our family adventures.

I'm part of a movement of hundreds of thousands of Victorians calling on you to give our ancient forests, fragile woodlands, rare wildlife and rich cultural heritage the chance to thrive now, and into the future.

Nature has waited too long. Communities have waited too long. We need action, not empty promises.
