As my elected representative in Victorian Parliament, I urge you to make sure the Allan Government keeps its promise and legislate the new central west parks.

Land-clearing, overuse of resources, poorly planned development, invasive species, and deforestation are tearing ecosystems apart. Pollution and fossil fuel use are also heating up our climate, leading to rapid changes.

The Victorian Government's 2021 Inquiry into ecosystem decline, national State of the Environment Reports, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) all highlight how urgent this situation is. They also provide clear solutions to help repair the damage caused by industrial activity and resource overuse.

National parks are an essential part of these solutions.

They exist to protect nature and are managed under Victoria’s National Parks Act 1975 with that goal in mind.

For instance, when a state forest is reclassified as a national park, it gains stronger protections from activities like mining and logging. It also receives more funding to help tackle issues like invasive species.

There are so many reasons to legislate all of the protected areas your government has committed to:

• The central west protects our water supply, including the headwaters of important rivers including the Moorabool, Werribee, Lerderderg, Maribyrnong, and Wimmera rivers. 
• These landscapes are home to over 370 threatened plants and animals, such as Powerful Owls, Brush-tailed Phascogales and Greater Gliders.
• National parks are great for both people and nature. The Victorian parks estate contributes at least $2.1 billion annually to the Victorian economy through tourism and supports over 20,000 jobs.

Contrary to a serious and deliberate disinformation campaign from special interest groups, the reserve system is specifically designed with a mix of tenures and uses in mind.

It includes almost 20,000 hectares of regional parks for most recreation activities, including firewood collection. If the whole package of protected areas isn't implemented with proper funding, it would undermine this careful and considered planning.

I urge you to support and endorse legislating all of the accepted VEAC recommendations for central west national parks. This includes the Pyrenees National Park and other reserves like additions to the Bendigo Regional Park.
