Dear Premier and Ministers,

From Eastern Curlews in sea grass meadows to salty mangrove flats, Western Port Bay is a rich natural tapestry. Victoria’s second largest bay is a beloved community playground, an internationally protected Ramsar wetland and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

But decades of pressure from inappropriate commercial and residential development are taking their toll. The bay's marine life and landscapes are in serious trouble and climate change is compounding these challenges. The natural systems of the bay need help. They need a bold act of leadership.

Despite best intentions, Western Port Bay endures inconsistent planning, inadequate oversight and monitoring and poor accountability and governance. Inappropriate and damaging projects are consistently proposed with little regard for the health of this intricate web of life.

The health of the bay is in serious decline and an overarching plan for its management is missing. Despite these huge challenges, there is a solution: The Western Port Framework.

The Framework sets out clear steps and solutions to defend the bay from inappropriate development, pollution and climate change.

This holistic strategic plan for Western Port Bay has broad and enthusiastic support. From Traditional Custodians, members of parliament, business, tourism, and nature protection groups. It's formally supported by the four Western Port local councils.

All of these parties are keen to collaborate with the state government to bring an overarching strategic plan for Western Port into fruition. It just needs commitment to start it.

I urge you to adopt the Western Port Bay Framework in this term of government to protect the bay's wetlands and support sustainable marine and tourism industries.
